The twelve parts

  1. 01

    White hockey mask

    Friday the 13th (1980)

The mask arrives two sequels late and outlives the entire franchise. Pedants, we know.

  2. 02

    Black cape, red lining

    Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)

The collar does the acting. Coppola knew exactly what he was buying.

  3. 03

    Black crow on the shoulder

    The Birds (1963)

One bird is a bird. Two hundred is a Hitchcock film.

  4. 04

    Red and green striped sweater

A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984)

Craven picked the two colours the human eye finds hardest to look at together. On purpose.

  5. 05

    Canvas straitjacket sleeve

The Silence of the Lambs (1991)

Sixteen minutes of screen time. Every one of them buckled shut.

  6. 06

    Black and white striped sleeve

    Beetlejuice (1988)

Vertical stripes on a man who is horizontal about everything else.

  7. 07

Claw hammer in a tool belt

    Oldboy (2003)

Park Chan-wook made a hardware-store item into a genre. Nobody has taken it back.

  8. 08

    Rusty chainsaw

The Texas Chain Saw Massacre (1974)

Hooper shot it so cheaply it looks found. That is the whole horror.

  9. 09

    Scissor blades for fingers

    Edward Scissorhands (1990)

The one part in this line-up that never hurt anybody on purpose.

  10. 10

    Pale blue mechanic coveralls

    Halloween (1978)

Coveralls, because the budget could not afford a costume. Fear does not need one.

  11. 11

    Bare oversized hairy feet

The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)

The only cheerful thing in the room, and it walked here from the Shire.

  12. 12

    Small red tricycle

    The Shining (1980)

The sound design does the work: carpet, floorboard, carpet, floorboard.
