The twelve parts

  1. 01

    Black bowler hat

    A Clockwork Orange (1971)

The hat that made politeness frightening. Kubrick put it on a boy and it never washed out.

  2. 02

    Narrow black sunglasses

    The Matrix (1999)

Sunglasses with no earpieces, worn indoors, in the rain, at night. Nobody asked why.

  3. 03

    Gold chain and medallion

    Scarface (1983)

De Palma dressed excess as jewellery. The chain arrives before the man does.

  4. 04

    White three-piece suit

    Saturday Night Fever (1977)

The suit worked harder than the plot. It is still working.

  5. 05

    Yellow sleeve, black stripe

    Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003)

Borrowed from a martial-arts legend, then borrowed again by Tarantino. We are third in the queue.

  6. 06

    Brown leather jacket sleeve

Raiders of the Lost Ark (1981)

The most stolen jacket in cinema. Ours is a fake, obviously.

  7. 07

    Chrome skeletal hand

    The Terminator (1984)

Cameron built the endoskeleton because the budget could not afford anything softer. Good accident.

  8. 08

    Briefcase with a glow

    Pulp Fiction (1994)

The combination is 666 and the contents are none of our business.

  9. 09

    Utility belt, oval buckle

    Batman (1989)

Everything a detective needs, and no pockets. We have thought about this a lot.

  10. 10

    Red velour tracksuit trousers

    The Royal Tenenbaums (2001)

Anderson dressed grief as sportswear. It reads instantly, which is why it is here.

  11. 11

    Red glitter slippers

    The Wizard of Oz (1939)

Silver in the book, red on the screen, because Technicolor had to earn its keep.

  12. 12

    Potted houseplant

    Léon: The Professional (1994)

He wanted roots. The plant got them first.
